where can i get a german shepherd puppy in las vegas?
A animal shelter is the best place ever to get a dog!!

holistic treatments for dog allergies?
I have a 7 year old German Shepherd mix, male. He started itching himself last week (no fleas here, we live in Las Vegas). The vet put him on allergy meds and steroids. He is eating an drinking himself silly (steroids) and peeing on the rug. Previously this dog would hold himself for 15 hours if necessary. Poor boy, he is so miserable.
Does anyone know any alternative to steroids? I had eczema, and it didn’t go away until I stopped all dairy products.
All input is most welcome, thanks.
Steroids should be a last resort. Sounds like the vet may possibly have jumped the gun here. Did you rule out a food allergy and fungus and sarcoptic mange?
Assuming you have, most vets recommend you try three different antihistamines (Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin, etc) before resorting to steroids since they can be hard on the body. Some of these take several days to work so I would give them a week to do their thing before switching to the next. Different anti-histamines work better for different dogs. Make sure you get the proper does from your vet.
Another alternative is to do immunotherapy. It’s like allergy shots people get. You get your dog allergy tested (either blood test or skin test where they inject a bunch of things and look for reaction) and then use specially formulated allergy shots. It’s successful about 75% of the time but may take 6-12 months to be effective. If you’re not getting the answers you need from your vet you can ask for a referral to a doggy dermatologist. Dermatologists typically require you treat for sarcoptic mange before seeing you, though. It’s hard to catch on skin scrapings and easy treat, that’s why they insist..

The Beauceron dog has variously been known as the:
• French Shorthaired Shepherd
• Beauce Shepherd
• Bas Rouge
• Red Stocking
• Berger de Beauce
Beauceron Dog History
With origins that date back to the late 1500s, the Beauceron dog is an entirely French dog breed. The name Beauceron actually stems from the plains and region around Paris known as La Beauce. The Beauceron properly came into its own as a definitive breed in 1809 when concerted efforts were underway to separate the multitude of various French herder dogs. Eventually it was decided that the shorthaired dogs would be named after the Beauce region while the longhaired ones would be named for the Brie district.
Beauceron Dog Breed
The Beauceron dog is the largest of the French sheepdogs and its heyday as such was utilized as an all purpose farm dog with herding, protection and guarding duties. In 1893 the Beauceron was registered for the first time by the Societe Centrale Canine and by 1900 it was appearing in dog shows. In 1911 the first Beauceron breed club was formed but despite that this well-recognized French dog breed remained pretty unknown outside of France.
The Beauceron’s character and intelligence makes for the ideal police dog and during both world wars this dog breed was used by the French military as a messenger dog and was even employed to carry replacement ammunition belts strapped to its body. To this day the Beauceron still plays a useful role within the military, commonly being used to detect mines and explosives, a task at which it has proved to be particularly adept.
Beauceron Dog Temperament
The Beauceron is an exceptionally intelligent dog breed as befits an animal whose original purpose was to excel at multi-tasking. Beaucerons are very loyal, calm and courageous dogs that are little disposed to strangers or other animals which is unsurprising because one of their breed traits was to protect livestock and guard the farm. Overall the Beauceron is a relatively strong-willed breed that requires early socialization and a firm hand if it is not to become unruly. That said the Beauceron is invariably safe around its own family members and will go to great lengths to protect them. However they can become a little rowdy with kids and tend to want to herd them so it is wise to set boundaries.
Beauceron Dog Maintenance
The Beauceron dog is a very active animal with an extremely agile mind that needs a good dose of daily stimulus both physically and mentally. In the absence of sufficient daily stimulus the Beauceron dog has a tendency of becoming destructive because it is bored. Despite its work-dog heritage as a herder, the Beauceron is very much the family dog and it is unwise to relegate it to long periods of isolation in a kennel.
Beauceron Dog Appearance
Quite commonly the Beauceron dog is illustrated in photos with pointed or pricked up ears giving the dog an added aura of fierceness, but this is not the natural appearance of this dog breed. In fact with a growing distaste for cosmetic mutilations in dogs more and more people retain the Beauceron dog with its ears allowed to hang down in their natural state. In appearance the Beauceron dog has been likened to a cross between a German Shepherd and a Doberman Pinscher.
The body of the Beauceron dog is powerful yet athletic in appearance befitting an animal designed to herd and protect livestock. Typical of herding dogs the Beauceron does not hold its head high when moving but keeps it level with its back. The Beauceron sports a dense outer coat of medium length comprised of straight hair in conjunction with a dense undercoat the combined combination of which make for formidable weather-resistant protection. The usual color pattern of this dog breed is black-and-tan like that of the Doberman but rare harlequin form does exist too.
The Beauceron dog strangely enough possesses rear double dewclaws a throwback from more superstitious times that has persisted up until till today whereby any dog lacking this largely useless feature will be disqualified from competitions as they are now considered a breeding trademark.

Good protection breed for cold weather?
I may be moving to Ohio soon, and I’m planning to get a 2nd dog shortly after I arrive. I currenly own a 4.5 month old male Akita, and will be getting a female pup once he is about 7-8 months old. I support rescue, and will look for my next dog on Petfinder, but would like some opinions on a good breed. I prefer guardian breeds (hence the Akita) that are 70-100 lbs. as adults. Will need a double coat to endure the cold on walks and such (although it will be an indoor dog). I’ve researched many of the mastiff-type breeds, but am unsure how they do in the cold. Also considering a Malamute, German Shepherd, or Great Pyrenees. I know the males of these breeds can get over 100 lbs, but I’m looking for a female and so they may still fit into the size range I’m thinking of. The dog would live on 1-2 acres with a fenced yard and my Akita as a companion. Thanks for your opinions!
Why not a female Akita? There are a number of young females currently available from various rescues. In Ohio, you should contact Midwest Akita Rescue Society (MARS). They are very knowledgeable and can help you find the right dog. Akitas do very well, as a rule, in male/female pairs.
Siberians are great dogs, but guard dogs they are not. As for being watch dogs, they will watch someone break in, they’ll watch them load up your stuff and watch them carry it off. I’ve had Sibes since 1979, and have yet to have one of them so much as notice anyone coming or going. My female Akita, on the other hand, is very watchful, more so than my male.
As for the double coat and hot weather – they probably do better in extremes than very short haired dogs, who suffer from very cold weather and can sunburn in the summer. The double coat acts as an insulation to both keep heat in and out. It’s not that they don’t heat up in the summer, but probably not as much as you might think.
So my #1 choice would be a female Akita.

8 week old Extremely Shy Puppy?
ok we just rescued a German shepherd/lab mix the shelter had her for three days when we got her shes 8 weeks old i don’t know whats up with her but she will follow you and then when you try to pet her she will back up then do the same thing? she will let you pet her if you get a hold of her and she will let you give her a belly rub. but shes SO shy is this normal? will she grow out of it?
Make sure you socialise – they have to meet hundreds of new people and other dogs before they turn 16 weeks to be properly socialised. I know the vet will tell you to keep them at home until they are fully vaccinated, but this can create a heap of behavioural problems. Just be smart about it and don’t take her to dog parks but take her to puppy training and to friends houses and anywhere you want her to go as an adult. My puppy trainer recommends taking puppies to seven new places a week until they are 16 weeks. It will ensure they are well socialised and happy (not shy or aggressive)
german shepherd adoption
Does any one have any Huskies or German Shepherds for sale/adoption?
I live in bakersfield, ca and i’m looking for a husky or german shepherd available anywhere around bakersfield. So if anyone has one for sale or adoption please post here.
yeah sorry i just realized that.
This is the wrong place to ask a DOG question.
Rather than reposting it in the dog section:
1) call all your local rescue groups
2) talk to your local vets
3) talk to your local pet stores
4) search at Petfinder and Dogster
5) if you want a pure-breed, visit the AKC website and the Husky and GSD breed groups for California. You can google search for those groups or find them via the AKC website.

German Shepherd is a very enjoyable process. Their breed is perfect if you want either a pet or a service dog, or both. That’s why many people planning to buy or adopt a dog, go for this breed. But like any other dog breed, certain noticeable traits should be known by the prospective dog owner before bringing home one.
For starters, German shepherd pups are very excited. At a very young age, their athletic nature and energy immediately surface and because they grow-up really fast in size, you’d might be having a problem if you have kids or elderly at home. This is purely because of the breed’s size and active nature and does not have anything to do with aggression. However, this could be easily addressed through training German Shepherd.
Another thing to consider is that this type of breed is hard to leave alone. Their size could prove to be destructive if they are untrained and are left to their own devices.
That’s why socialization plays a very important role in a dog’s life. Dogs should be left to socialize with people and with other dogs to ensure that they do not develop any form of aggression towards humans and other dogs.
While these may discourage a potential owner, you should remember that the key to addressing and preventing these problems rely heavily on training German Shepherd. Through proper training, German shepherds would pick-up correct behaviour and certain tricks.
I personally train my dogs and have developed a number of tips and tricks through the many years of experience. Dog training is an investment but it doesn’t have to be expensive! Sometimes, the best dog training are the free ideas you learn and not pay for!
