My German Shepherd Puppy Bit My 2yr Old son.What To do?

My four month old puppy was out in the kitchen today with my 2yr old son.My son is always going near the dog when its eating something and the dog has warned him off before.Today my son went to pick up an empty bowl from the dog,and she bit him.It caused a graze and drew blood.The dog puts up with alot of pulling about etc from my son,and doesn’t mind him taking a chew out of her mouth or anything like that. It did suprise me that she did bite him today.I am starting a training club on Monday,will this help? I don’t want to get rid of the dog,i only turned around for a second when that happened.I am teaching my son to feed the puppy,hoping this will help,and am trying to make sure she knows her place within the family.It does worry me that this has happened at such a young age,shes a really nice,well behaved dog overall.

Take the advice of the first answerer. I bet you’re red in the face and can’t believe the answer’s your getting, but buck up and learn to take the criticism and learn more about your breed and how to raise a puppy.

What do I need to do to get my dog ready for a show?

Well I have a 3 month old German Shepherd. I know you have to be 6 months old for show but he needs the training. I don’t really want to take him to a club because the closest one is about 30 minutes away and very expensive. Is there anyway I can train him for the show myself. I have a lot of time, so what does he need to be trained for. Also he’s very smart, he learned basic commands (sit, stay, fetch, come, heel) at least at 8 weeks. So what does he need to be prepared for? By the way its conformation events
Im not doing obediance

It sounds as though you are planning on showing in obedience & not conformation. This is a good place to start.
When I started showing, I also started in obedience & I purchased the book “Training Your Dog to Win Obedience Titles.”
There are other books out there, but this one worked for me.
You can also check out books on dog training at the library.
As long as your dog knows all of the commands and you know the rules and etiquette, then you should be ok.
You can get the “Rules Applying to Obedience Shows” on the AKC website.
One problem with training your dog without the class setting though is that he will not be used to performing in a dog show setting – such as the situation that would be simulated at a training class.
You should try to attend a kennel club meeting in your area or meet some people in your area who show & they will be more than happy to help you in finding matches in your area. These are practice sessions to get your dog ready to show.

You may need one!?

If you intend to breed from your puppies and sell them you must wait until the bitches are a minimum of two-years-old. The bitches will only be allowed to produce one litter a year for a maximum of six years.

But you may need a license from your local council, they will explain the terms and conditions of the license. Just go up to your local council and ask or call them up and ask them.

Why is my dog a racist?

My dog doesn’t like black people and he is always trying to chase them. Especially when I am taking him for a walk and a black man is jogging down the road. He is a full grown German Shepherd. And Don’t say it’s because I am a racist because I am not. I just got the dog two months ago from my uncle in Atlanta and he used to be a police dog.

Although my answer was to be a ‘bit different’ when I FIRST read your question…after reading it entirely I am quite sure the ‘true answer’ is that he has spent MOST of his time as a police dog having to ‘corner’ or chase down black people. PLEASE…no one take THIS as a racist answer.
I raised German Shepherds and have called them ‘family’ since I was little and my father trained them in the Marine Corps. They are extremely intelligent. MY ANSWER in no way ‘implies’ that all black people or even a PORTION of them are ‘criminals’ JUST…that this dog has learned by his OWN LIFES EXPERIENCE in Atlanta that ‘blacks are not to be trusted’ ONLY BECAUSE by ‘happenstance’ that WAS his experience!!! Perhaps he patrolled in a mostly black area…so therefore HE WOULD naturally see ‘blacks’ as potential threats…because he was NOT GIVEN THE EXPERIENCE of the same example in a WHITE neighborhood.
There is ALSO the possibility that sometime in his life he SAW a black person ‘do something bad’ to someone he loves OR that a black person TEASED and TAUNTED him. Don’t think that dogs have no ‘memory’ although it MIGHT not be that of an elephant…they DO REMEMBER.
This would be ‘my best guess’ and perhaps you can clarify it by contacting your Uncle. Somewhere along the time of ‘his life’ SOMETHING happened to make him believe BLACKS are ‘bad’ or not to be trusted. Speaking of PEOPLE…aren’t there White people who have had BAD EXPERIENCES who feel the same about black people however ‘irrational’ that may be’ they REMEMBER the person who HARMED them in some way…was black. And for that matter it is the same with BLACK people…how many ‘harbor’ irrational fears and resentments and unreal feelings about WHITE people simply because of how SOME white people harmed them IN SOME WAY???
The dog should be WELL trained in one word or two word commands. With MY DOGS one word they learned was ‘GOOD’ and when they were suspicious of a person who was ‘to be trusted’ I put my hand on the persons chest and VERY FIRMLY said “GOOD” to tell my dog this person was to be considered a FRIEND…not foe.
Part of his training was to be ’suspicious’ and aggressive upon his ‘instincts’ SO he will be! It is also part of his German Shepherd instinct to be ‘aggressive and protective’ that is WHY they make good military and police dogs.
If he is grown, you may NEVER completely ‘convince him’ black people are NOT ALL to be mistrusted, but with YOUR FIRM COMMANDS and TRAINING he should definately learn to OBEY and TRUST your DEMANDS of him.
Ask your Uncle for his ‘command codes’ so that it will make it much easier for you to keep this dog and UNDERSTAND him and keep his TRAINING in line!

I am not going to put every dog breed on here that would take way to much time and you should get the idea. Lastly I did mention all but I believe the first dog.

Sporting Group: Curly-Coated Retriever. A long time ago, I read an online journal that chronicled a woman’s endeavors in raising a Curly-Coated Retriever through clicker training. That journal introduced the breed to me, and I guess I just sort of took a liking to them.

Hounding Group: Pharaoh Hound. I think they’re just gorgeous, although the chances of my ever owning one are rather slim as they are drastically inappropriate for my lifestyle. I’ve always fancied owning a female Pharaoh Hound named Phineas, though.

Working Group: Mastiff. They fit my lifestyle quite well, and they’re just plain adorable. They’re affectionate, friendly, mellow, tolerant and patient, and yet they still retain powerful guardian instincts. Plus, once they’ve outgrown their puppy exuberance, they’re just as lazy as I am.

Terrier Group: Airedale Terrier. Not an appropriate companion for me, but they’re handsome, sweet and hardy.

Toy Group: Pug. I genuinely do not care for the appearance of most Pugs, but I have to say that they’re probably one of the only toy breeds I could own — I’m too clumsy and rough for the more delicate ones.

Non-Sporting Group: Standard Poodle. I’m not a fan of most cuts, but I have no qualms with something like the utility clip. They’re just loving, intelligent dogs. (A friend of mine recently lost one of her black standard boys to gastric torsion/dilatation. His name was Dalamar. He was a sweetheart.)

Herding Group: German Shepherd. They’re just intelligent and loving hard workers.. This was a hard one, though, because I do so like Border Collies and rough-coated Collies.

how much to own a SchH 3 IPO 3 German shepherd. Which is better working line or show line.. and why?

A working line dog will give you a lot of performance (they are very energetic) but I would recommend that you get one only if you have a job for it i.e. you are a police officer and need a partner, or are involved in Search and Rescue, etc. A show line dog will have less “drive” and make a better family pet, but not as good a working partner as a working dog. Also, the show dogs (esp. American show) tend to have highly angulated rear ends and are prone to hip dysplasia.

A SchH 3 dog is one that is already trained and titled. It’s going to be really hard to get someone to part with such a dog. It will cost a lot of money ($2000-3000) range, and you will have to seriously prove that you will offer this dog a good home.

If you want to start in the Schutzhund, you might consider purchasing a puppy from a breeder with Schutzund dogs in it’s pedigree, and then getting involved in a local Schutzhund club that will help you out with training. That way when your dog makes SchH 3 someday, it will be as a result of your training and you can take lots of pride in that!

If you are looking for a personal protection dog, a lot of SchH dogs are useless in that regard. If there isn’t a sleeve to bite, they can get confused. You’d be best purchasing a trained dog from a reputable protection trainer and breeder.

Have you ever had to walk in the rain before?

I just took my dog for a 10 mile long walk. Half way through it, it started raining and we had no where to go so we had to keep walking in Florida rain. It took 2 minutes and both of us were soaked. I had to walk down a busy road so all people saw was a soaked kid and his german shepherd dragging themselves home. I laughed the whole way home. By the way, I just got home 3 minutes ago. lol.

I am sorry to hear about your dog. That is called gastric torsion. It is common in GSD and other deep chested dogs. Generally it occurs if the dog exercises too soon after eating and the weight of the stomach flips over the top. Usually death is only a few minutes away. It is a horrible death for a dog.

Steps to Successfully Sell a Puppy in Your Auction Fundraiser

I love dogs. And I’m not alone — my town of Alexandra, VA is one of the United State’s friendliest dog towns. Since there are lots of dog lovers in this part of the world, each year I usually sell one or two donated puppies as part of a live benefit auction.

Selling a puppy in a live auction makes the event memorable and typically (in D.C.) brings a $2,000 to $5,000 sale. Most bidders respond to the animal positively and are eager to pet the little guy while inquiring about its age, vaccinations, breed, etc.

Be sure that you have the paperwork proving the vaccinations were done at the appropriate time are furnished by the veterinarian administering the shots. In the event the winning bidder is from out of state, it is necessary to show proof of Rabies vaccination. It’s best to keep all of the puppy’s veterinary paperwork together in a file that can be given to the winner so that the exchange can be done quickly and smoothly.

To make the sale a positive experience for human and creature, here are some tips.

1. Select the right breed

Choose a popular breed such as Retrievers, German Shepherds, Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers. If you’re not sure, be sure to visit http://www.akc.org to check out the current favorites. Be sure to avoid exotics or any breed with negative press. I adore pit bulls and bull terriers, but I don’t suggest selling either in a fund raising auction because of the negative press they’ve received.

Similarly, the odds of selling an “extra-large” dog (e.g. Saint Bernard or Greater Swiss Mountain). Mixed breeds can be successfully sold, especially if it combines two popular breeds (i.e. cockapoo or labradoodle).

2. Be sure that the puppy’s temperament is calm.

If you have an option, select one of the least high-strung puppies of the litter. As adorable as that puppy is when its squirming in its pen, we don’t want a puppy squirming in a volunteer’s arms during the silent auction. Calm, quiet dogs show best and will sell better.

3. Sell the animal early in the live auction.

To minimize stress on the puppy keep it inside the live auction room for a short amount of time. Noise can be hard on those little ears!

4. Sell only one animal per live auction.

Keep it memorable by selling only one.

5. Know that some national groups don’t agree with the sale of live animals at a gala.

The official position of the Humane Society is that animals should be prohibited from being sold at auction. Animal rights groups have a fear (perhaps valid) that the dog will go into a home where it won’t get good care. Consider ways you can protect the animal to ensure it goes into a great home. Every creature deserves TLC.
