You know, I used to have the same problem. When my GSD was younger, his teeth were sharper. I did want to play with him and sometimes I even wore my old welding gloves. 90 percent of the problem he naturally grew out of. He’s a year old now. Sometimes he wants to play rough and I don’t mind if he’s mouthy. He’s pretty careful about not biting hard.
But sometimes, mainly when he was a puppy, he bit hard and didn’t want to stop. I tried putting bitter apple spray on my hands as well as tobacco sauce. Those worked, but only to a limited extent.
My ultimate solution was spraying a mist of vodka in his face from a cheap plastic spray bottle. I chose vodka because it is cheap, doesn’t smell to bad, and doesn’t stain our carpet. Before any of you animal rights advocates go ballistic, I would first say “NO” and give Alex a chance to calm down. I would physically remove him from the room. If he came back to me and tried to bite, I would hold the spray bottle in plain view and say “Alex! No!” If he bit me again, I would spray him, trying to aim for his mouth. Alex was a quick learner. I believe that I sprayed him somewhere between 4-6 times in his life. After that, I only held the spray bottle in front of him, and he would stop the behavior. Then I would praise him with petting and give him a food treat.
However, what I found was that if the spray bottle was not visible in the living room, he would often bit me. He needed to know that it was there. Sometimes all I needed to do was point at it.

The history in brief:
After the allied armies reached Berlin near the end of WW2, Germany was divided up between the allied powers – a quarter each to Britain, France, the USofA, the USSR – as was Berlin itself. The USSR controlled the eastern sector of Germany, and set up what Sir Winston Churchill called an “Iron Curtain”. As Berlin was entirely within the eastern section (known as the DDR), that meant that there was no access to the allied sectors of Berlin, except through Soviet territory. And when the Soviets decided to close the roads & railway in & out of west Berlin (as a reprisal for one of the many disputes between the Soviet politicians and the “western allies” politicians) the allies had to resort to FLYING all supplies – food, fuel, clothing, materials – in to west Berlin’s citizens!
And in 1961 the Soviets constructed the Berlin Wall to ensure that spies couldn’t sneak from west Berlin into East Germany, and that citizens of the DDR couldn’t sneak into west Berlin and then fly to West Germany (known as the FDR – or was it the DFR?).
The mentor of one of my New York State pen-friends was one of the few who managed to escape from the DDR to West Germany (he had been warned that the police were about to conscript him & his dog for police dog work) – AND he managed to take his herding dog with him!
Because
(1) when the Soviet army reached Germany it was desperate for food, and so the soldiers killed & ate most of the dogs they found, and
(2) the DDR was totally cut off from the rest of Europe and so its blood-lines were isolated from the Siegers-etc,
over the decades the attitude & behaviour & shape of the DDR dogs differed somewhat from the dogs in West Germany (although not as much as the GSDs in NAmerica differ from the GSDs in Europe & South America).
But it all ended when the Soviets left Germany, and the citizens of Berlin dismantled the Berlin Wall in November 1989.

For some purposes, the DDR stock (which was mainly bred to guard prisoners & military establishments – owning big pets was not something common in the DDR after the Soviets stripped as much equipment-etc as they could from the conquered territory) became superior to the other European GSDs, but for other purposes they became inferior. When the Berlin Wall was finally dismantled and the Soviets drove out of Germany, most breeders of DDR dogs enthusiastically mated their bitches to the top western GSDs, to “update” their type.
The best DDR-line GSDs are VERY intelligent, full of initiative. But many of them are reputed to be what would, in a human, be regarded as “dull” & “sullen”, needing to be bullied into performing. And others are totally unforgiving of poor handling, instantly biting a handler who abuses them.
So you REALLY need to know the actual animals in the pedigree if you are thinking of obtaining a GSD from what used to be DDR lines.

My 10 1/2 week old female puppy is a GSD mix puppy. Her mom was a big mutt but definitely has shepherd in her. She was a stray so the father is unknown but I’m guessing that her dad was a purebred GSD or a mix because my puppy looks almost like a purebred (except her fur which is kind of wavy but short)
My question is: Does anyone have a picture of a GSD that is all black with tan paws, tan chest, tan under the tail and tan cheeks, but no other tan other than that? I just wonder if there are GSD’s like that?

Keep in mind all dogs are a pain in the butt from about 8 months to about 18 months, so if you get her well trained by 8 months, she’ll be easier to take during the obnoxious stage.

London pest control back in the news
Pest control in London has been making lots of headlines in recent months, with much discussion of the rights and wrongs around effective pest control. London pensioner Pamela Rowe was outraged when she discovered that her beloved dog had been killed by two rogue pest control officers in London. Pest control officers Terrance Webb, 28, and Mark Page, 35, cruelly baited pieces of bread with a deadly insecticide so they could ‘watch crows die’ around Alexandra Lake on Wanstead Flats, London. Pest control was the last thing on their minds, however: as a result of their actions, almost 90 harmless wild birds died, as well as Mrs Rowe’s German shepherd setter cross, Russett, her companion for five years.
Webb and Page were sentenced to four months in prison and fined £7,000 in October. They had been overheard by colleagues bragging about the birds they had killed and how they would return the next day. The two were tried at Southwark Crown Court, London. ‘Pest control is a serious business,’ says pest control expert Tony Halliday, of Bypest. ‘Poisons such as Ficam W, which was used in this terrible crime, are extremely dangerous and should only be used by pest control experts. It’s a great shame that two pest control officers, one of whom is a dog owner, should let themselves and the pest control London industry down in this way.’
Also in October, a quiet cul-de-sac was in uproar when residents were outraged at the chosen methods of pest control. London district Roehampton had been prey to foxes fouling paths and digging holes in gardens, so local residents contacted a local property management company. They responded by asking pest control marksmen to shoot and kill up to ten foxes with live ammunition. Some observers maintain that animal rights campaigners hijacked the situation in order to mount a protest.
‘Because foxes are seen as cuddly and cute as they are portrayed in the media and books then obviously people’s feelings are stronger against anything being done,’ commented wildlife manager Bruce Lindsay-Smith. ‘You can’t kill foxes without using live ammunition, just as you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.’ However, it seems people find it difficult to deal with such a brutal method of pest control. London may be full of foxes, but hearing shots ring out in the night is something few homeowners want.
City dwellers maintain that foxes are a real problem as they become more and more bold, digging up bulbs in gardens and ripping open bin bags to find food. But animal rights campaigners claim that shooting foxes is a waste of time, since another fox will simply move into the territory vacated by the animal that has been killed. It seems that when it comes to fox pest control, London is facing some hard choices.
Even the Queen herself isn’t immune to problems with pest control. London pest experts were called in to Buckingham Palace in October when staff reported seeing rats around the palace kitchens. The problem first came to light while the monarch was holidaying at Balmoral, and traps have now been set to capture the rats before any damage is done. Staff believe that warm weather and longer opening hours for state rooms may be behind the problem.

—OFA Certification Clinics sometimes offer these tests for as little as $60-$70- Orthopedic Foundation for Animals – Hip Dysplasia (aka degenerative joint disease) is another common genetic disease found in most breeds of dogs. OFA certification involves having a veterinarian take x-rays of the dogs hip joints. The x-ray is then sent to OFA for evaluation and the dog is given a “grade”. OFA grades of Excellent, Good, and Fair are all considered normal, non-dysplastic grades. OFA certification can not be done until a dog is 2 years old.

Is it a good idea to let a german shepherd play frisbee?
Well, you see…..I introduced my german shepherd to the frisbee about a month ago and he became really good at it surprisingly fast. He leaps in the air to catch it and everything! The problem is, I know that German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia. My dog was OFA certified (if it matters), but I don’t want to do anything that can physically harm my dog later, even if that means taking away something he loves to do. So is it a bad idea.
He is a german working line german shepherd….
everything in moderation … when playing frisbee don’t make the dog jump in the air to catch every one, throw a few grounders too :O) a man at the doggie park told me his golden retriever had hip surgery due to problems that resulted from fetching the ball as the dog would chase the ball and then put on the brakes to get it which damaged the dogs hip joints … but he did admit he played fetch daily for at least an hour which is not moderation … play frisbee but just do other things too
german shepherd police k9 whist watching one of fly on the wall police programmes .. . .k9 dog unit ?
i noticed that the k9 unit had a some what different type of german shepherd .
the guy doing the commentary for the Program said this is a special type of german shepherd , i just thought , it just a big sable german shepherd .
as the program continued it turned out that the police GSD was in fact a saarloos wolfhond cross german shepherd
how can this be legal for the police to you part wild , part wolfdogs , when here in the uk we have the dangerous dogs act ,
the officer said the dog enjoy’s his work , with a twinkle in his eye , what he was really saying , this police dog likes to bite.
its this right there is a law for us and a law for them ?

do you think it acceptable for the police to use part wolfdog part GSD for work ? or are they still a little unstable and a little bit human aggressive for police work ?
All dogs are different. Wolf dog hybrids can be aloof and skitish, but there are extensive tests done for ability, training potential, etc.
Remember, it’s a team effort. The dog is only as good as his training and his handler. Sounds to me like someone wasn’t doing their job…and I don’t mean the K-9
K9 Handling in the Police Force?
I am working on my career planning stuff right now, and I need a list of sites that give information about Police Force K9 handling. (I am going into the Air Force with the intentions of being a K9 handler as a MP) and because I “can’t go to college” to be trained for that while in the Air Force, I have to come up with questions and answers about K9 handling. And so far all the sites that I have found are about importing GSDs (German Shepherd Dogs) and getting Belgian Malinois’ for police work, and where to go to buy them for your force, nothing about the training of the handler’s or anything. And I need to find out how I can interview some of the K9 handlers. I already have written an Email to the Sacramento PD (Where I live) but I need some more -in depth- information that I am having a hard time trying to provide.

You have to sign a contract,do ALL the basic training before you can even ask for special training,w/no guarantee of getting it.
