I found a stray German Shepherd puppy…?

It was malnutritioned, and had a sweatshirt tie around its neck. We are keeping it for a while since the pound would probably put it to sleep… It is timid and we think it was abused. How do you approach and take care of a dog like that? (We also have a territorial Chow mix, how do I keep the dog feeling comfortable with the other dog around?)
I looked around, it was probably dumped.

The puppy may have gotten out of someones yard or dumped. Look in the paper and call your local animal shelter to see if anyone has reported a missing dog. Keep the dogs in separate areas including area which are used for elimination as you want to keep your Chow free from disease.You are correct, the pound will give him little or no time to be adopted so you must take him to the vet and make sure that he is clear of Parvo or distemper. This will be a minimal expense compared to what your Chow will endure if he catches any of these.
Being a puppy, he may not have been abused but is timid because he has been walking the streets and dodging people, cars and other dogs.

What is the best age to have my german shepherd female puppy spayed?

I recently bought a german shepherd puppy, I want her spayed, I was wanting to know at what age can I get her fixed and what is the best dog food to feed her, she is growing so fast and eating all the time I dont think that the purina puppy chow is not filling her up. Please help me thanks.

and study the 2 research reports on the possible side-effects of neutering, with the odds of each happening related to the age at which neutering was done.
There is no blanket “best age” – it depends on the quality of your fencing & security pen, and on whether any of your household & “just walk in without waiting” visitors are thoughtless idiots.

The ideal is to wait at least until the bones have finished lengthening – say 11-15 months, although full maturity in GSDs isn’t until 2½-3½ years.
If you shouldn’t HAVE a bit.ch (for reasons such as fences that DON’T keep stray dogs & stray brats OUT, such as family members or friends who unthinkingly open the door without first checking where the pooch is) then you need to spay early. How early? – well, one of my bitches had her first season at 4 months old.

Two points:
• NEVER spay while the bit.ch is on-heat – there is too much risk of internal haemorrhage.
• If your fertile bit.ch DOES manage to get mated there are 2 solutions:
(1) Have the vet give her the course of 3 carefully-spaced injections that prevent the placentas from embedding into the uterus (I’m told the chemical is illegal in some Bible Belt states).
(2) Have her spayed 2-3 weeks after she finishes the heat.
Neither is an ideal solution to the problem (FENCING and PRECAUTIONARY-CARE are the ideal solutions!), but place less stress on the mentally-&-physically immature bit.ch’s system than does carrying & rearing a litter.

◙ Diet:
The proper diet for an adult canid is based on raw animal protein – birds, eggs, fish (but not those needles), insects, mammals, reptiles. That is what the canid digestive system (acid strength, available enzymes, gut length) evolved to perfectly suit. During the millennia of domestication, dogs that couldn’t survive on cooked table scraps plus whatever mice & moths they could catch died – just as dogs that cannot thrive on kibbles are nowadays dying from bloat.
Being mammals, puppies need enriched milk, as well.

Note 2 points from the bloat research:
(1) If you work out which calendar years fit the 35 year period in which bloat went from almost-unheard-of to scaringly-common, you will find a close match with the period in which kibbles went from virtually unknown to virtually-universal. Coincidence? – I think NOT!
(2) It states that if you use kibbles you should cover them with cooked table scraps
(but no baked/roasted bones, please).

There are many ways to feed a dog, and most dogs survive most of them – very opportunistic, are canids! But some are more related to allergies and bloat than are others. That section includes a way to compare kibbles, if you MUST use them. My adult GSDs cost me $7.01 each per week, with not a crumb of kibble.

• Join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group’s Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos.

Siberian huskies have become increasingly popular in recent years since their introduction to the United States in the early part of the twentieth century. In deciding whether Siberian huskies are the pets for you, it is important to consider a number of factors including the level of commitment you are willing to put in as well as the physical environment in which you live in.

For starters, it is of primary importance to assess the level of commitment which you are willing to put in to raising your Siberian husky. It is important to note that the amount of commitment required to raise a Siberian husky is in many cases considerable and would include looking after the dog’s nutritional, training, health and social needs. Moreover, your living environment is also a key consideration when it comes to adopting a Siberian husky. Siberian huskies are dogs which are used to the outdoors and require wide open spaces to run about. This point can be best emphasized when considering their large physical build as compared to other dogs. It would definitely not be a good idea to adopt a Siberian husky if you are living in a cramped apartment in the city as there would not be enough space for your Siberian husky to move about freely. In contrast, Siberian huskies would make an excellent choice for a pet if you are living in the countryside with a large mansion. As such, it is important to place due consideration to space constraints before deciding to get a Siberian husky.

You would also need to consider whether you have small house animals in deciding whether to adopt a Siberian husky. While generally warm and friendly towards humans and larger pets, the voracious hunting instinct of the Siberian husky comes alive with small house animals. These include hamsters, guinea pigs, squirrels and rabbits. Siberian huskies can cause serious harm to these animals if placed in close proximity with them. As such if you do have these small house animals, it would certainly not be a good idea to adopt a Siberian husky.

If you are looking for a watch dog and think that the Siberian husky would make a good one because of its large physical build, then you might be mistaken. The friendly, warm nature of the Siberian husky towards people means that these dogs are devoid of suspicion towards people and can interact freely even with strangers. If you are looking for a watch dog, then you might want to consider other breeds of dogs such as a German shepherd.

Rounding things up, it is important for you to assess your level of commitment, living environment and needs before making the decision to adopt a Siberian husky.

A german shepherd/chow mix that scratches 24/7. Please Help!?

My dog, Winter, scratches all the time. He doesn’t have fleas. I believe he may be getting bit by ants or he may have skin allergies. I hate seeing him like this. And recently it’s getting worse. Unfortunately, the vet can’t see him until next week. Can you answer these questions for me?

-I was doing once every two weeks is that too much or too less?

What else should I be doing until his appointment?

If it’s that severe, I’d first give him some benadryl to get him some relief. Start with a half a 25 mg tablet and if that doesn’t do it you can give him the other half.
Then you should call your vet back and tell him your dog’s in pain, they’ll usually make room for emergencies and even though it’s not a true emergency, your dog is miserable so try to talk them into an earlier appointment. Or call other vets.

Corn and wheat are the main source of food allergies but soy and other ingredients can also contribute.
Lamb/rice is generally considered a better choice for dogs with skin problems but there are other options with turkey/barley, oatmeal, salmon, and limited ingredient diets.

If you don’t see bites it’s probably not ants. Could be grass, mites, or even a thyroid issue. Get an oatmeal based shampoo and some analgesic cream or aloe to help him through til his appointment. And if necessary you can continue to give benadryl, but even though I give it to my dogs based on veterinary advice years ago, I encourage anyone call their vets to confirm any advice given here before they try it.

Add: forgot to say once a month is plenty for a bath unless he really gets really dirty. Just brush regularly to help keep him clean.

Top Ten Dog Breeds on Apartment Restriction Lists

All dogs can be potentially dangerous, however some dogs are more dangerous than others. Various types of breeds can be considerably stronger and larger than a person of average size. From my experience, the following breeds are almost always on restricted breed lists of most apartment communities.

10. Dalmatian

Weight: 40-70 lbs.
Origin: Yugoslavia

Dalmatians are very protective dogs and can be aggressive towards humans. They are very active and need lots of exercise. They have very sensitive natures and an excellent memory. This bred is famed for their intelligence, indepedence, and survival instincts.

9. Boxer

Weight: 50-70 lbs.
Origin: Germany

Unlike their name suggest, these dogs are not typically aggressive by nature. They are bright, energetic and playful breed. Boxers have been known to be “headstrong”, which makes it a bit difficult to train them but with positive reinforcement techniques, Boxers often respond much better.

8. Presa Canario

Weight: 80-115 lbs.
Origin: Canary Islands

Originally bred to guard and fight with cattle, an attack by this dog has been described as hopeless for the victim. They are a guardian breed with man-stopping ability, incredible power and a complete lack of fear.

7. Chow Chow

Weight: 50-70 lbs.
Origin: China

These dogs can be aggressive if poorly bred. The Chow Chow may appear to be independent and aloof for much of the day but needs constant reinforcement.

6. Doberman Pinschers

Weight: 65-90 lbs.
Origin: Germany

Dobermans are great guard dogs for their alertness, intelligence and loyalty. They can be aggressive dogs when provoked. The typical pet Doberman attacks only if it believes that it, its property, or its family are in danger.

5. Alaskan Malamutes

Weight: 75-100 lbs.
Origin: Nordic

These dogs are very energetic and active. If they are bored, they can become destructive. That’s why this dog needs lots of exercise to be happy.

4. Huskies

Weight: 44-66 lbs.
Origin: Alaska

Very energetic and intelligent dogs. Not considered a good guard dog because of its personality characteristics and gentle temperament. A 2000 study of dog bites resulting in human fatalities in the U.S. found fifteen such fatalities (6% of the total) were caused by “husky-type” dogs between 1979 and 1997.

3. German Shepherds

Weight: 70-100 lbs.
Origin: Germany

These dogs are intelligent and very alert. They are highly used by local authorities such as the police K-9 unit. German shepherds are known to be fearless and confident dogs.

Rottweilers are known to be very aggressive dogs because of their keen territorial instincts. That’s why they make great guard dogs.

A pit bull is a fearless dog that will take on any opponent. They will lock their jaws onto the prey until it’s dead. Pit bulls have a reputation of mauling people to death and they are highly sought for dog fighting.

Dogs most often make wonderful pets, however in certain circumstances, any type of dog can be dangerous. Even friendly dogs, may cause harm in the wrong circumstance.

Not all apartment properties have breed restriction lists but this is not something that is commonly known. Your best bet is to contact an apartment locating company in your area to obtain a list these properties and their current availability.

When can a German Shepherd and a Siberian Husky puppy play together?

My best friend just got a male husky puppy who is almost 10 weeks old and I have a 5 year old German Shepherd female, and I am getting ready to introduce them tomorrow and wondering how would be the best way to do this. I heard that I should get the puppy’s sent on me and then hold him and introduce him to my dog. But I was wondering if the puppy is old enough where I can just set him down also and let them play as long as my dog doesn’t get too rough, or should I not let them down together yet? He is a pretty big puppy. Any advice?
I didn’t think about vaccines, what if my German Shepherd has had all her vaccines before will she be ok then? Like Bordetella, is that just a one time thing?

Anytime you will let them, you must socialize the puppy anyway, and just make sure you stay close, till the GS is use to the puppy, I have pups and grown dogs that play together all the time…….it does not hurt at all, Like I said stay close till they are really use to each other…..

it will be good for the baby to have a playmate, I warn you, the GS may not take kindly to being tugged on at first.

THE TOP TEN MOST INTELLIGENT DOGS – How Intelligent are dogs and wolves? What breeds are the smartest dogs today?

1. “Left for the wolves.”

In the late Spring of 1902, Constable Richard Morris, of the North-West Mounted Police, reported an incident dealing with the native Cree Indians and their dogs. Stationed in a community north of Lake Winnipeg, he noticed that a number of dogs had been staked out in the forest. Each one was left alone and fastened to an iron stake by a chain. When he asked the reason for this, the Crees told him that the dogs were “left for the wolves.”

When Constable Morris objected to this treatment, the Crees explained that the dogs wouldn’t be harmed by the wolves. The dogs — Ungava huskies — were females in heat. Male wolves without mates of their own would be attracted to the females and mate with them, resulting in cross-bred puppies with “wolfblood.”

Morris said, “Oh, I see. This is so your sled-dogs will be bigger and stronger.”

“No,” said one Cree. “A wolf can outrace our dogs in a quick dash — but our huskies have much more stamina than wolves and can easily outlast them in a long run. Wolves make poor work dogs.”

“Then,” concluded Morris, “it’s because wolves are healthier.”

“No. They are the same.”

“Then — why?” asked the Mountie.

“Up here,” replied the Indian, tapping his forehead.

Father LeBeaux, an Oblate Missionary, later explained, “The Cree people believe that when an animal becomes domesticated, each generation loses in intelligence. That’s why wolves are more intelligent than dogs. The Indians say, ‘The closer to the wolf, the smarter the dog.’ If it is true of domesticated animals, what does that say of civilized man, eh?”

 

 

2. “How intelligent are they?”

Our ancestors might have asked this 15,000 years ago when they played with their adopted wolf or jackal pups — the first dogs.

Even the ancient Egyptians asked that question, and studied their own dogs to answer it.

The first modern attempt was by Rene Descartes, who only went one step beyond the cloudy thinking of his time, saying all animals were just soulless biological machines. Descartes set up the narrow, human-centered theory of behaviorism that would dominate until well into the 20th Century.

For decades, behaviorists put animals — including dogs — through sterile tests in sterile labs, looking for mechanical results that proved worthless.

In the middle of this muddle came one sane voice: Donald Griffin, professor of biology at Rockefeller University, who said, “Behaviorism should be abandoned not so much because it belittles the value of living animals, but because it leads to a serious incomplete and hence misleading picture of reality.”

In 1953, Konrad Lorenz’s MAN MEETS DOG created an instant classic about canine intelligence. Written with humor, wisdom and great insight, the German Nobel Laureate almost single-handedly recreated our methods of exploring animal behavior.

In his ground-breaking 1994 book THE INTELLIGENCE OF DOGS — CANINE CONSCIOUSNESS AND CAPABILITIES, Canadian Stanley Coren, psychologist, dog trainer, “and avowed dog lover,” presented his controversial Ranking of Dogs for Obedience and Working Intelligence.

Coren ranked 133 breeds, from #1 on… The reaction was predictable: “The Poodle? He ranked a POODLE above my Belgian sheepdog?” “Come on! My Samoyed is smarter than any Australian Cattle Dog!” “No Papillon can out-think my Lassie.” “OK, maybe a Poodle is intelligent –but…”

“Controversial” doesn’t begin to describe the reaction to “Coren’s Ranking.”

But his observations have proven to be pretty accurate. Coren was testing, of course, pure breeds. The “purebred” Siberian husky, for instance, isn’t as quick-witted as the native husky of northern Siberia. This is even more true of the Alaskan malamute. We deliberately breed out some of the “wolfishness” in our pets.

 

 

3. “Never Cry Wolf!”

In 1963, Farley Mowat’s NEVER CRY WOLF appeared on the bookshelves. Described as “an intimate casebook in wolf sociology,” Mowat described how, as a biologist employed by the Canadian Wildlife Service, he had spent a summer on his own, studying a pack of Arctic wolves. The book sparked an avid interest in wolf research that has never dimmed.

IN PRAISE OF WOLVES and SECRET GO THE WOLVES described R D Lawrence’s close experiences with wolves in Canada. DANCE OF THE WOLVES by Roger Peters describes his three winters in the forests of northern Michigan. These and others have shown us the remarkable lives and intelligence of the wolf.

R D Lawrence wrote: “Reality, particularly in the case of wolves, means that these animals have keen intelligence, excellent memory, and demonstrable capacity of conscious thought. When Shawano fed his pack before keeping a piece of chicken for himself, he demonstrated not only that he could profit from experience in a profitable way, but that other wolves could do so as well.

“This demonstration is alone sufficient to discredit the mechanistic theory which contends that evolution, by means of hereditary imprinting, has led to the thoughtless or automatic responses of animals to any one of an enormously wide variety of natural stimuli…

“Memory, by allowing an animal to benefit from experience, plays an important role in the formulation of conscious decisions; the better its memory, the better able will the animal be to adapt to a changing environment.”

It’s the wolf’s intelligence, as well as its loyalty and great heart that caused our ancient Northern ancestors to bring the wolf into their families, or to interbreed their existing dogs (probably of ancient jackal ancestry) with wolves.

Today, we mingle with wolves, in sanctuary and in the wild.

And fictional works, from Jack London’s THE CALL OF THE WILD to the latest movie EIGHT BELOW have celebrated the wild wolf dog in Literature and in Hollywood.

Wanting some basic info on a German Shepherd/Chow mix?

Hello, my husband and I were on a long search for a dog since we got our own place and we got a call from a woman that she has a 6 mon old german shepherd/chow mix puppy she is willing to give us. He sounds perfect, but I wanted to get some basic info on these types of dogs first.

Basically I’m just wondering, how their temperament is, how big they get, are they typically good around children, do they bond well, and any other info that I may need.

Also, if you have a german shepherd/chow I would love to hear your experience.

With mixes, there is a random outcome.
Two GSD/Chow mixes could look identical but act completely different.
Or look different, and act the same.
Or have both the same, or neither the same.

I would assume that the dog will be of a fair size, and likely rather strong willed.
But beyond that, I would have no idea.

What should I do if I feel like my mom is p*ssying out my German Shepherd?

When I first got my German Shepherd at 2 months old, he was pretty cool and would listen to me and everything. We would wrestle, jog together, play fetch, all that yadadad. My mom has spoiled her Chow chow/Golden Retriever mix, giving her wet food all the time (the dog won’t eat dry food anymore). I told my mom constantly to never give my dog the wet canned dog food. One day she did, and he never ate dry food that I gave him. The wet dog food is not good for dogs especially a meat eating German Shepherd, and definitely not nutritious(spell check) My mom just like her dog loves him like and also has turned him into a b*tch, I can tell b/c whenever I wrestle the dog now, instead of fighting me back he runs to my mom or under a chair. This is exactly what I feared, of what do I do?

First, talk with your mom. Tell her exactly what you said here in your post. Ask her advise. Put her on the spot and get her to help be responsible for finding solution. The ash content in wet dog food is very bad for their health. Tell her this straight out. It’s like feeding them a mild poison. Eventually, it adds up over time and can cause serious health problems for the animal.

Next, deal with the retraining of your dog. Every dog “partners” with only ONE HUMAN at a time. It thinks of itself as a “couple” with it’s chosen human. When two people or more are around the animal, the one that gives the dog the most attention and direct care will be the one the dog will couple with. The dog will favor being with that person over the others around. It sounds like your dog has coupled with your mother and you have to fix that. She should be asked to ignore your dog and treat it with indifference, while you give it extra attention. Spend quality time with your dog. Not just wrestling or playing, but walking, and when you are sitting watching t.v. or reading or whatever. Have a lot of physical contact petting and talking to him. Soon he will come to relate to you as his primary care giver and couple with you instead of your mom. Once this happens, gently teach him to rough house play again like he did before. Not too rough at first because that is no fun for him. Realize he wants to “win” sometimes too! So let him. Play like he has the upper hand. Dogs love this kind of play!
