German Shepherd Corgie mix Snaps Randomly.?

My pup Buddy is about 8 months old. Ive moved into my mothers house and my little brother reached for Buddy’s toy and he snapped at him. They had been playing on the floor together for a good 10 minutes before this happened. Tonight we were on a walk and a neighbor started petting him, then all of a sudden he snapped at her. Hes never actually bitten anyone. It’s Random, hes really good most of the time then out of the blue he’ll snap. I rescued him when he was about 4 months old. The last thing i want to do is to take him back to the shelter. Any Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Please don’t take him back to the shelter! Spend a little money and lots of time, and work through this with him.

Your dog has hit the age of unpredictability where he is a typical teenager: moody and perhaps becoming aware of new things that are frightening him, only because he is maturing. If he is not neutered, do it immediately. German Shepherds seem to like consistency, so he may be still adjusting to the move. It does sound as though he may be exhibiting some resource guarding. He hasn’t had to share toys or you before you moved, but now someone reached for his toy, and then a neighbor was moving in on you! He feels he has to protect both. You need to take a positive approach and manage things immediately so no one gets hurt, Then, as quick as you can, contact a behaviorist or trainer for help.

Begin working on some positive reinforcement with him. Click and treat so there will be good things for him to think about. Have you been to dog training classes? They are the best way to help you through some of these typical problems. Most dogs have issues of some sort, and your’s may seem quite easy compared to other people’s! I would recommend you enroll him in a class immediately. Instructors will help you understand his behavior and how to address it. Look for someone who is affiliated with the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers), as they will use behavior modification with no physical aversives. Good luck.

The Continuation: Famous People and their PAWpular Dogs – Presidential Pets

This is the continuation of first part of the Famous People and their Pawpular Dogs featuring the Presidential Pets.  Most of the US presidents are pooch fans so now it’s time to meet more of these pets, to know their breeds and know their names.

Calvin Coolidge had a number of dogs as compared to other presidents.  He owned various breeds and gave them cute names.  He had White Collies named Rob Roy and Prudence Prim and he also had a pair of Chow Chows named Tiny Tim and Blackberry.  He also had a couple of Collies which he called Ruby Rouch and Bessie.  Coolidge also loved terriers so he took care of Peter Pan, a Terrier and Paul Pry, an Airedale Terrier.  He had four more pooches known as Calamity Jane, a Shetland Sheepdog; Boston Beans, a Bulldog; King Cole, a German Shepherd; and Palo Alto, a Bird Dog.

These two next former presidents were also big dog fans.  First up is Herbert Hoover who was reported to have had nine dogs of different breeds.  He owned King Tut (Belgian Shepherd), Pat (German Shepherd), Big Ben and Sonnie (Fox Terriers), Glen (Scotch Collie), Yukonan (Eskimo dog), Patrick (Irish Wolfhound), Eaglehurst Gillette (Setter) and Weejie (Norwegian Elkhound).  Next is one of the most popular presidents in US history, Franklin D. Roosevelt.  He had seven four-pawed friends namely Fala (Scottish Terrier), Majora (German Shepherd), Meggie (Scottish Terrier), Winks (Llewellyn Setter), Tiny (Old English Sheepdog), President (Great Dane), and Blaze (Bullmastiff).

Next in line are Harry S. Truman who had two canine friends,  Feller (Cocker Spaniel) and Mike (Irish Terrier); and Dwight Eisenhower who had a Weimaraner called Heidi.  Like the first three presidents mentioned above, John F. Kennedy had a long line of pets too which are mostly dogs.  He had Gaullie (Poodle), Pushinka (mutt), Charlie (Welsh Terrier).  Pushinka and Charlie had four children called Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie, and Streaker.  JFK had three more dogs, Shannon (Irish Cocker Spaniel), Wolf (mutt), and Clipper (German Shepherd).

Moreover, Lyndon Johnson was a beagle lover.  He had four beagles which he fondly called, Him, Her, Edgar and Freckles.  He also had Blanco (White Collie) and Yuki (mongrel). Richard Nixon had four dogs, Vicki (Poodle), Pasha (Terrier), King Timahoe (Irish Setter), and Checkers (Cocker Spaniel) who had a major role in his electoral career.  Gerald Ford had a Golden Retriever called Liberty who then had a pup which he called Misty.  Jimmy Carter was reported to have had Grits (Border Collie) and Lewis Brown (Afghan Hound).

Ronald Reagan had a collection of dogs too. He owned Lucky (Bouvier des Flandres), Rex (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel), Victory (Golden Retriever), Peggy (Irish Setter), Taca (Siberian Husky), and Fuzzy (Belgian Sheepdog).  On the other hand, George H.W. Bush only had one dog, Millie (Springer Spaniel) who just then had puppies.  Same as Bush, Bill Clinton also had one pooch, Buddy, a Chocolate Labrador Retriever.  Unlike his father, George W. Bush had three dogs, two Scottish Terriers named Barney and Miss Beazley, and an English Springer Spaniel named Spot Fetcher.  Lastly, the current president Barack Obama owns Bo, a Portuegese water dog, popularly known as the First Dog of the United States.

Now, we’ve met the presidential dogs.  It’s nice to know that despite their busy schedule in running a nation, these presidents are still able to take time in giving petsafe care to their pets.

What would happen if your dog bit someone elses face?

I had a party a couple hours ago, and we had our dog outside. Our house is fenced in, and my dog was tied up. We put up a sign saying beware of dog. A little girl came into my yard to pet my fully grown male german shepherd. When she touched him, he bit her in the face. Is it fair if I get sued?
No, the child was not a guest. The dog was not unsupervised, and he was sleeping in his doghouse.

The outcome is going to be entirely dependent on two things: what the parent does, and the laws in your state.

Yes, it is absolutely fair. Your dog was not supervised, which makes the incident more than likely your fault. It is entirely reasonable to expect a CHILD to attempt to pet a dog. Said child was an invited guest to your property. You will more than likely be on the hook for this.

If it were me, I would profusely apologize to the family, pay the medical bills and pray you don’t lose your dog.

ETA: The sign doesn’t mean anything. It was a child who approached the dog and was bitten. Could the kid even read yet? If she could, do you think it’s reasonable to expect her to notice it or know what it meant? In many states, children under 7 are not deemed to be capable of any reasoning whatsoever. Even if they provoked the dog, it’s not there fault legally.

Do right by the parents by paying any bills they incurred. You are on the hook for them legally anyway, so just offer to pay them and avoid those legal fees.

What happens to your dog is entirely up to your state. If the child receives medical treatment, which she needs if the skin was broken, the bite will be reported. The city and or state will become involved.

ETA: Ok, I thought the child was a kid of one of the party guests.

If the child wandered into your yard and got bitten, you have a much better chance of winning. The dog was behind a fence and that is reasonable care and control from a legal standpoint.

Brazil – Society & Culture & Religion

The Brazilian culture is without any doubt an extremely diverse Latin American culture. As far as the influences are concerned besides the original indigenous cultures, we should mention Portugal mainly because of the very strong colonial ties with the Portuguese Empire from which Brazil got the language, Catholic religion, the legal system and other cultural traditions. Brazil’s culture derives not only from other European influences but also from some South American, African and also Asian cultures. As you can see, the Brazilian culture is a mix of a variety of cultures spread all over the world.

Brazilians have natural affectionate human warmth, like nothing you have seen before and most of them are very happy and have a rather enthusiastic, spontaneous nature – which they show at every celebration (and their number is quite remarkable). As far as their religion is concerned, experts affirm that Brazil is the largest Roman Catholic country in the entire world but the truth is that you will find a great variety of religious beliefs and practices here. Officially, Brazil was a catholic country since the 16th right until 1889 when the Portuguese Empire disappeared. The 1889 constitution guarantees full religious freedom and since then, a wide variety of beliefs have been practiced. However, in 1996 a study made by CNBB also known as National Conference of Brazilian Bishops showed that approximately 80% of the inhabitants declared themselves as Roman Catholics. Many of the Brazilian people are married and baptized in the Catholic Church but they don’t attend Sunday Mass quite often.

Candomble – a religion that is found in Brazil was brought here by the slaves that came from Benin and Nigeria. According to the Catholic officials and the slave-owners, the African slaves had to be converted to the Christian religion and as a consequence, banned from performing Candomble rituals. In order to maintain their traditional practices but at the same time contenting their owners, the slaves coupled their deities with corresponding Catholic personalities.

Protestantism – over the last decades, this religion has grown in popularity quite rapidly. The 2000 Census stated that about 15% of the Brazilian inhabitants identify themselves as being Protestants and approximately 85% of them are Evangelical or Pentecostal. The Lutherans and the Baptists make up the bulk of the remaining Protestants and they are centered in the southern part of Brazil, where the majority of German and northern European immigrants concentrated during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Moving on to the literature aspect of Brazil, the most popular writer is without any doubt Jorge Amado (1912-2002). He was born in Salvador and his writings captured the personality and spirit of Bahias. His most successful novels include: The Violent Land (1944), Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958), Shepherds of the Night (1964) and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1966). Another well-known Brazilian writer was Machado de Assis (1839-1908). He was a novelist that had a deep understanding of human relations. In the 20th century, other notables Brazilian writers were born, like: Clarice Lispector, Garciliano Ramos, Cecilia Meireles and others as well.

All things considered Brazil is a wonderful and interesting country at the same that and that is why every year, millions and millions of tourists visit it.

Are there any organizations in the midwest that could help me train my dog to be a service dog?

I have several autoimmune diseases that sometimes make it difficult to do things or even get out of my bed. I recently got a german shepherd and he seems like he has the right temperament (from my limited knowledge) and learns very quickly. He’s already about a year old…. I’m primarily looking for him to do things like get my medicine bag and bring it to me, get things that I have dropped, and maybe assist me with things like going to the grocery store for a few items. He’s very sweet and likes to be helpful and I’ve heard that shepherds are particularly happy if they have “jobs” to do… I just don’t know where to begin with him…

Separation Anxiety In Dogs

Separation anxiety is one of the most common problems that dogs develop. Its an anxiety disorder, and is defined as a state of intense panic brought on by the dogs isolation or separation from her owner. In other words, when you leave for work in the morning, your dog is plunged into a state of nervous anxiety which intensifies extremely quickly. Dogs are social animals they need plenty of company and social interaction to keep them happy and content. No dog likes to be left alone for long stretches of time, but some dogs do a lot worse than others and these are the ones most prone to separation anxiety. There are a number of contributing causes to the condition.

Some breeds are genetically predisposed towards anxiety and insecurity, which is something you should consider when deciding which breed you are going to go for particularly if you are going to be absent for long stretches of time. A few of these breeds include Weimaraners, Springer Spaniels, German Shepherds, and Airedales. A significant proportion of dogs from shelters develop separation anxiety. Most of these shelter dogs have undergone significant trauma in their lives they have been abandoned by their previous owners and thus they have little trust that their new found owner.

Dogs that were separated from their mothers and siblings too early have been identified as being especially prone to separation anxiety. Puppies from pet stores are a perfect example of this. They are usually taken from their mothers well before the earliest possible age which is 8 weeks, and confined to a small glass box in the pet store for anywhere between a few weeks to two months. This early weaning, coupled with the lack of exercise and affection while in the pet store, is psychologically traumatic for the dog.

Neglect is the number one cause of sepration anxiety for dogs. If you are absent much more than you are present in your dogs life, separation anxiety is pretty much inevitable. Your dog needs your company, affection, and attention in order to be happy and content. The symptoms of separation anxiety are pretty distinctive. Your dog will usually learn to tell when you are about to leave, she wll hear keys jingling, will see you putting on your outdoor clothes, and will become anxious. She may follow you from room to room, whining, trembling, and crying. Some dogs even become aggressive, in an attempt to stop their owners from leaving.

When you have left, the anxious behavior will rapidly worsen and usually will peak within half an hour. She may bark incessantly, scratch and dig at windows and doors, an attempt to escape from confinement and reunite herself with you, chew inappropriate items, even urinate and defecate inside the house. In extreme cases, she might self mutilate by licking or chewing her skin until its raw, or pulling out fur or will engage in obsessive compulsive behaviors, like spinning and tail chasing.

Upon your return, she will be excessively excited, and will leap around you in a frenzy of delight for a protracted period of time more than the 30 seconds to one minute of a happy, well balanced dog. This extended greeting is a source of some misunderstanding without realizing that such a greeting actually signifies the presence of a psychological disorder, some owners actually encourage their dog to get more and more worked up upon their return by fuelling the dogs excitement, encouraging her to leap around, paying her protracted attention, and so on.

If you are behaving in this way with your dog, please stop. I know its tempting and very easy to do, and it seems harmless after all, she is so happy to see you, what harm can it do to return her attention and affection in equal measure? but in actuality, you are just validating her belief that your return is the high point of the day. So she is as happy as Larry when you return but, when its time for you to leave again, her now exaggerated happiness at your presence is under threat, and she gets even more unhappy when you walk out that door. Fortunately, there are things you can do to minimize your dogs tendency towards anxiety. Here is a short list of what to do.

Do exercise the heck out of her. Really wear her out, the longer you expect to be away, the more exercise she should get before you leave. For example, if you are leaving for work in the morning, she will probably be by herself for at least four hours and, if you have got a dog walker to take her out mid day instead of coming back yourself, she will not see you, the person she really cares about for at least nine hours. So she needs a good, vigorous walk fifteen to twenty minutes is the absolute minimum here, before you walk out that door. More is even better.

Distract her from her boredom, loneliness, and anxiety by giving her an attractive alternative to pining, pacing, and whining. All dogs love to chew, why not play on this predisposition? Get a couple of marrowbones from the butcher, bake them in the oven for 20 minutes so they go nice and hard and crunchy and so she can not smear marrow all over your furniture, slice them up into chunks of a few inches long, and give her one about 15 minutes before you leave. It will keep her happy and occupied, and will act as a smokescreen for your departure.

When you leave, put the radio on to a soothing station, classical music is ideal, but any station featuring lots of talk shows is also ideal. Keep the volume quite low, and it will calm her down a bit and give her the feeling that she has got company. If at all possible, supply her with a view. If she can see the world going by, thats the next best thing to being out and about in it.

Acclimatize her to your leaving. Taking things nice and slowly, practice getting ready to go, jingle your keys about, put on your coat, and open the door. Then without leaving sit back down and do not go anywhere. Do this until shes not reacting any more. When there are no reaction, give her a treat and lavish praise for being so brave. Next, practice actually walking out the door and returning immediately, again doing this until there are no reaction. Gradually work up, gradually being the operative word here until you are able to leave the house with no signs of stress from her.

Do not act overtly sympathetic when she is crying. Although it sounds very cold hearted, trying to soothe and comfort your dog by patting her and cooing over her is actually one of the worst things you can do. Its essentially validating her concern. Make sure she can not tell that you feel sorry for her, do not ever say, its ok, good girl when she is upset.

Dog trainers in Toronto?

We’re looking for a really good dog trainer in Toronto. We have a 2 year old German Shepherd from Egypt who was abandoned as a pup. As a result, the dog does not know how to act with people.
What we are looking for is a professional trainer who can train the dog (and us since this is our first dog) in the following areas:

1) Get rid of the dog’s initial behaviour and habits
2) Protection/guarding
3) AKC Obedience
4) CGC training
4) Interaction with children

Are Horus And Jesus The Same?

With the success of the internet movie “ZEITGEIST” there has been a great deal of interest in the Egyptian religion, especially as regards how it is related to Christianity. One of the most intriguing aspects of this subject concerns the comparisons between the Egyptian god Horus and the Judeo-Christian godman Jesus Christ.

In my book “The Christ Conspiracy,” released in 1999, I created a list of several characteristics attributed to Horus, including the following:

* Horus was born of the virgin Isis-Meri on December 25th in a cave/manger with his birth being announced by a star in the East and attended by three wise men.

* His earthly father was named “Seb” (“Joseph”).

* He was of royal descent.

* At age 12, he was a child teacher in the Temple, and at 30, he was baptized, having disappeared for 18 years.

* Horus was baptized in the river Eridanus or Iarutana (Jordan) by “Anup the Baptizer” (“John the Baptist”), who was decapitated.

* He had 12 disciples, two of whom were his “witnesses” and were named “Anup” and “Aan” (the two “Johns”).

* He performed miracles, exorcised demons and raised El-Azarus (“El-Osiris”) from the dead.

*Horus walked on water.

And so on, through several more profound and germane correspondences.

The bulk of these attributes I have demonstrated in my nearly 600-page book “Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection,” using thousands of pages of primary sources and the works of highly credentialed experts in relevant fields. “Christ in Egypt” includes chapters on the following subjects:

* Horus as the sun god.

* Horus battling the Prince of Darkness, Set or Seth.

* His birthday on December 25th or the winter solstice.

* His mother’s name or title being “Meri” or “Mery.”

* The star in the east and the wise men at Horus’s birth.

* Horus at the ages of 12 and 30.

* “Anup the Baptizer”.

* Horus’s 12 followers.

The images and descriptions of deities in cruciform include Osiris, Isis and Horus, and the answer to the question of whether or not Horus was ever associated with the cross and depicted on a cross or in cruciform must be a resounding yes.”

I have a 5 month old German Shepherd puppy. Tonight I took him to my warehouse when I was doing some work. On my way back he threw up in the back of my cargo van. I think it is just the motion and noise the van makes, he is fine in my SUV. I have a 2 hour trip to the breeders house tomorrow and don’t have time to stop by the vets. Is there anything I can get for him that will help with that? Will he grow out of it?

Bloat Do You Know How To Spot This Common Dog Ailment?

Dog Bloat is a sickness that strikes millions of dogs without warning each year. It moves fast and without the proper diagnosis and treatment many dogs die.  The problem with dog bloat is that most dog owners do not know what symptoms to look for or how to respond if their dog visibly has symptoms.  This is an absolutely horrific and painful way to die, so join us as we discuss what bloat is and how you can learn to recognize and respond to the symptoms.

Bloat begins by causing an excessive amount of gas to build up in the stomach.  This causes the stomach to twist itself 180 degrees around and even a full 360 degrees from the esophagus down to the bottom of the stomach.  What this does is stop the blood flow to that part of the body and causes the tissue to die off.

This is where identifying the symptoms becomes crucial and demands timeliness.  Many specific breeds are known to have a bigger risk at developing bloat. Often they are larger breeds such as German Shepherds, Bloodhound, Great Dane, Akita, St. Bernard, Golden Retriever, Irish Setter and Doberman.

You may be thinking dog bloat is something that will never occur with your dog but statistics clearly show that bloat is the second leading cause of dog deaths and is second only to cancer!

There are many symptoms that may appear with bloat, so you will have to be diligent in observing you dog.  Start by looking for restlessness and anxiety.  Look to see if they are vomiting or have the dry heaves or even if they are attempting to vomit.  Are they whining, drooling, swollen abdomen, no digestive sounds or rumbling of the stomach?  Monitor their breathing for difficulty, increased heart rate and any weakness or collapsing.

Other factors that can influence dog bloat are your dogs age.  Older dogs tend to be more susceptible.  Underweight dogs, dogs that are hyper or anxious or dogs that are aggressive in nature are often prone to developing bloat.  So if a dog eats to fast or they skip a meal they potentially are more likely to develop dog bloat.  It is suggested that you spread their meals out to two or three small meals a day.

I personally believe in free feeding if it’s done correctly. A dog that is allowed to eat what they naturally need from the very beginning and is given a good quality food source will not overeat or eat like they are starving because they know the food source is always there for them to access. There is no need for them to pig out and eat it all in one setting when they can come back later and eat if they need to. I do want to point out that this does not work for all dogs and you may need to pick the bowl up if your dog overeats.

As we discussed above, if your dog has symptoms, you absolutely have to get them to the vets immediately.  Treating the dog bloat is the only chance at saving their life.  To treat the bloat, your vet will start by inserting a tube into the wall of the stomach.  This removes the excess gas.  After the gas is removed, the vet finishes operating on the stomach and untwisting it.

Should the dog continue to show signs of bloat following the surgery, then a second set of treatment procedures will be started.  These start with treating the shock symptoms your dog displays by hydrating them and allowing them to rest and treating any other complications that may pop up.

Because Doctors and Scientist have not actually come up with the exact cause of dog bloat, it is impossible to prevent.  However, since we do know some facts, you can implement a few prevention techniques.  Do not overfeed your dog or allow them to overeat in a single setting.  If your dog continues to overeat, then start giving them smaller amounts of food 2 or 3 times a day.

They do not recommend using elevated food or watering dishes and you should be adding enzyme supplements to your dog’s food to assist with digestion.  Limit their water intake right after they are finished eating.  Always keep your local veterinarian’s phone number hand and current for emergencies.

There is really nothing you can do to prevent bloat except to educate yourself and watch for the symptoms.  Then you will know how to diagnose and react should your dog ever begin to exhibit signs of bloat.

REMEMBER – Do NOT wait to get treatment for your dog!  This is the precious window of time that can save your dog’s life.  This is not the time to debate whether or not you want to pay for that vet call.  Acting promptly can save your dog’s life.

German Shepherd?

My wife brought home a german shepherd puppy this morning. It’s about 10-11 weeks old. You can see it has been mistreated but we will take care of it. The only thing that worries me is whether it’s too old for her first shot. I’m planning to take her to the vet tomorrow to clear her from parasites and give her shots but I have read that pups shpould receive their shots until they are 9 weeks old not later. Is it safe to get them now and can I expect to have a helathy puppy – it’s very important because I already have 2 dogs of my own and I don’t want to risk. Tnx

I would have this pup vaccinated now and then again in 2 weeks. Your vet might want to put a 3rd vaccine in it 3 weeks after that one when the pup then gets its rabies vaccine. With my pups, I vaccinate with Da2p+PV I use Vanguard plus 5. I vaccinate at 6 and 8 weeks, then 11 weeks 14 weeks and then rabies. Have the pup wormed, if you see her pass them , have her wormed again in one week.

Would it be ok for me to get a german shepherd puppy?

I work 12 hour nights for 4 months at a time then flop over to 12 hour days for four months. I work long hours but I am off for half the month as well because of the long days. If I were able to come home to walk my dog during lunch break do you think I could manage to successfully raise a german shepherd puppy given the fact that I would have a lot of days I can spend the whole day with him.

Here’s the thing. Puppies do take alot of care. Just getting them potty trained and being away for long hours, I don’t think it can be done. Even tho you could come home during lunch breaks, there is still too many hours and a puppy just can’t hold it that long. You will come home very tired and to deal with a puppy, and then there is the chewing of everything. Not to forget the adolescent stage sets in. Socializing alone will wear you out if done properly. Unless you can have someone be a doggy nanny and be at the house while you are at work. Then you would have lots of days with him. I would save up $ to do the doggy nanny on days that you can not be there. It’s just a thought.

Is US K9 Academy a good place to get my dog trained?

I have a one-year old pure bread german shepherd and I am looking for someone to give her obedience training. I spoke to this guy named Peter from US K9 academy in Hialeagh, FL. Is he any good? Does anyone know if its worth leaving my dog with him to train??????

French Film Soars at Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival is over for another year. The votes have been tallied, the red carpet was rolled up, and the world’s beautiful people have gone back to looking like the rest of us, or so we can dream. The 61st annual festival drew the eyes of the film industry and movie buffs alike across the pond to France, if only for 10 short days.

At the top of this year’s festival was the French film entitled “The Class,” a real-life depiction of life at a junior high school. It took home the Palme D’or, the festival’s biggest award.

It was the first French film to win the big prize since “Under Satan’s Sun” won the prize in 1987. All of the festival’s winners were selected by jury president Sean Penn and a nine-member jury including such Hollywood power players as Natalie Portman, all of whom voted for “The Class” to take home the Palme. The film was touted for its relevant social commentary and unconventional style.

Some other highlights of the prizes awarded include:

* Italian films by Matteo Garrone (“Gomorra”) and Paolo Sorrentino (“Il Divo”) took home the second- and third-place prizes.

* Benicio Del Toro took home best-actor honors for his role in “Che,” Steven Soderbergh’s epic about Che Guevara.

* Best actress accolades went to Sandra Corveloni for her role in “Linha de Passe,” a film in which she plays a mother of four struggling to make ends meet in a Brazilian slum.

* Best director went to Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylon for the film “Three Monkeys,” which is the story of a father who takes the fall for his employer’s crime in order for financial security for his wife and son.

* Former two-time Palme D’or winners Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne received the screenplay prize for their film “Lorna’s Silence,” about an immigrant woman who gets married only to gain Belgian citizenship.

* British filmmaker Steve McQueen won the first-time director prize for his film “Hunger,” a piece set in a prison in Northern Ireland where an IRA volunteer leads a hunger strike.

Another jury, the International Federation of Film Critics, awarded a special prize to film legend Clint Eastwood, who directed the competition film “The Exchange,” starring Angelina Jolie. Eastwood has never taken home top honors at the festival despite having made five appearances since 1985.

A film from Kazakhstan entitled “Tulpan” won a lesser competition called “Un Certain Regard.” “Tulpan” is a film about a shepherd who must wed before he can enter his trade, but his only prospect for marriage refuses him because of his large ears!

Other runner-up jury awards went to Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Tokyo Sonata,” James Toback’s documentary “Tyson,” German director Andreas Dresen’s “Cloud 9″ and Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s “Johnny Mad Dog,” about child soldiers in Africa.

In general, the festival judges found this year’s films to be somewhat lacking, especially in comparison to last year’s blockbuster hits like Joe and Ethan Coen’s “No Country for Old Men,” which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, proving that it attracted fans of both mainstream and unconventional films.

The festival closed out with the premiere of Barry Levinson’s “What Just Happened?” starring Robert De Niro, Bruce Willis and Sean Penn in a story about a has-been Hollywood producer who tries to revitalize his career while dealing with issues in his personal and professional lives.

With the Cannes Film Festival now wrapped up, Hollywood’s eyes are now turning toward Venice, where many U.S. films are expected to elbow out the competition on the Lido.

Hollywood heavyweights like Brad Pitt, George Clooney and John Malkovich will likely be there in support of the Coen brothers’ film “Burn After Reading,” and the stars of the film “Body of Lies,” Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe will also likely make an appearance. Kiera Knightly and Ralph Fiennes, stars of “The Duchess,” are also expected to make an appearance.

Any suggestions for removing a large tick from my German Shepherd’s mouth?

It is on the outside of his lip. It apparently has been there for quite a while, as it is quite large. It is very difficult to hold him still and he is very protective of that area. I think it probably hurts him. He licks off anything that we have tried to put on it.

If he wont be still i wouldnt try to pull it off with tweezers or with your hands. You dont want the ticks mouth parts to stay inside the lip because an infection could occur. What you could do, is get you some flea/tick spray at petsmart (adams flea/tick spray works well) then spray some onto a qtip and rub it close to the ticks head. Such a small amount will not harm your dog if ingested, and it should kill the tick almost immediately, causing it to fall off. Good luck!

Selecting the Right Breed of Dog

While there are no essential personality differences between the sexes of dogs, there is no doubt that some personality variations exist among the various breeds. Though rather minor, they are significant enough so that they should be inquired into in order that the particular breed can meet individual needs. This fact may be of special importance where there are children in the household. The disposition of an animal certainly must be compatible with the personality of the child. Some breeds have a tendency to be peppy, alert, excitable, or noisy, while others are generally quiet, lazy, or phlegmatic. Some are more likely to become one-man dogs, while others seem to want to encompass the whole world in their sphere.

There are, however, enough breeds to satisfy almost any requirement. Once the breed has been definitely decided upon, it is advisable to get in touch with a recognized kennel club agency. It is especially important that the breeder be highly recommended, for occasionally breeders have been guilty of dishonest practices, though these are the exception rather than the rule. In the final analysis, however, there are reliable and unreliable dealers in all fields and the discretion of the purchaser must ultimately decide the issue.

When the animal is purchased, a ten-day trial should be insisted upon, in order to have time to get veterinary certification of good health, and to ascertain whether the animal is of suitable disposition – that is, to find out whether the animal gets along with your family. The reliable breeder will agree unhesitatingly to such a reasonable request. Less reliable breeders will agree to a trial of only 24 to 48 hours. Since latent diseases often do not arise for several days, and since it usually takes more than a couple of days to decide whether an animal’s disposition is suitable, the prospective owner is advised to proceed with extreme caution when he has only a day or two to make his final decision.

A reference list of the recognized breeds of dogs follows. The various breeds were developed to adapt these animals to different activities; to learn to distinguish one breed from another; the best method is to attend dog shows. The official publications of the American Kennel Club give detailed information on the history and standards of the various breeds.

The American Kennel Club recognizes six major classes of dog breeds, as follows:

Group one: sporting dogs.

Griffon: Wirehaired-Pointing. Pointer: German Shorthaired. Retrievers: Chesapeake Bay, Curly-Coated, Flat-Coated, Golden, Labrador. Setters: English, Gordon, Irish. Spaniels: Brittany, Clumber, Cocker, English Springer, Field, Irish Water, Sussex, Welsh Springer.

Group two: sporting dogs, hounds.

Afghan, Basset, Beagle, Bloodhound, Borzoi, Dachshund, Deer-hound (Scottish), Foxhound (American), Foxhound (English), Greyhound, Harrier, Norwegian Elkhound, Otterhound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Whippet, Wolfhound (Irish), Wolfhound (Russian).

Group three: working dog.

These include some of the largest breeds in the dog world. They are best suited to being used as guard dogs for police or army purposes, watchdogs, herding dogs, sled dogs, etc.

Group four: terriers.

These breeds have a sporting background. They are adapted to hunting small game, especially where a considerable amount of digging is required.

Airedale, Bedlington, Border, Bull, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Fox (Smooth), Fox (Wirehaired), Irish, Kerry Blue, Lakeland, Lhasa, Manchester, Norwich, Schnauzer (Miniature), Schnauzer (Standard), Scottish, Sealyham, Skye, Staffordshire, Welsh, West Highland White.

Group five: toys.

These have been bred as novelty dogs and have no work or sporting function.

Affenpinscher, Chihuahua, English Toy Spaniel, Griffon (Brussels), Italian Greyhound, Japanese Spaniel, Maltese, Mexican Hairless, Papillon, Pekingese, Pinscher (Miniature), Pomeranian, Pug, Toy Manchester Terrier, Toy Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier.

Group six: nonsporting.

While some of these breeds have a sporting, guard-dog or hunting background, they are now bred mainly as pets. They include some of the most distinctive and handsome animals in the world of dogs.

Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, French Bulldog, Keeshonden, Poodle, Schipperke.
