How should I train my German Shepherd puppy?

Long answer:

Constant stimulation.

If your puppy still needs shots:
Having friends over and introducing your puppy to new people in a controlled environment. Correct behavior while he’s small. Barking, jumping, growling (probably won’t be doing this yet) on guest.

You can start off with the basics – sit, down, come. Associated with all these words should be release phrase. i.e. sit should be a sit until I release you. For my german shepherds release phrase is “lease.” Try not to use words like , okay and good.

Depending what you’re training your dog for or if you have kids one important exercise I like to do with my puppies is “never bite the hand that feeds you.”

I’ll put a bowl of food in front of my puppy. Once the puppy starts to eat it I will put my hand in the bowl. Play with the food while eating. Take the bowl away and put it back. I’ll do an exam, like one given by the vet. Pull gently ears, tails, and legs. If the puppy shows any type of aggression/domination I’ll correct it. Be careful not to get bit by accident from the puppy being exited by food.

If your puppy has shots:

Take him out for long walks. Take him to petco/petsmart. Take him for walks along busy streets, contrsuction, etc. My favorite place to take my puppy is Home Depot. Be watchful, though. People are going to want to pet the puppy. Make sure they ask and only if the puppy is calm.

German shepherds are a working breed. They love having jobs. Even simple jobs. There are fun puzzle games you can leave in your backyard for your dog to play with while you’re at work. This will help cut down on any future distruction down the road.

Also be aware that if your puppy is play biting, you want to correct that behavior now before he gets to big. Around 4 months you’re going to want to get a lot of teething toys to get ready for month 5 and 6 when he goes through it. They usually get really mouthy around this age and will test you on skills that they have learned or been corrected on. Be patient and consistent.

Hi, I’m after one young puppy German Shepherd in Surrey,then closer tom Kingston then better, what place/shop would you recommend me, and if you know someone that has puppies for sale then let me know as well.

They are Schutzhund trained and all sables, although i know she has produced a couple of black pups too depending on the sire she put her b1tch too.

The breeders are fully competent trainers too.

Not in Surrey, in Manchester, but they are quality dogs bred to work but a great temperament too and can be kept as pets.

Also, not 100% decided about having another litter but there is a distinct possibility for one that should be ready at the end of Dec 09.

You couldn’t find better as far as i’m concerned.

Has anyone ever heard of or dealt with Amari German Shepherds in Atco NJ?

I am looking for a companion dog who could possibly do some obedience and or agility. I am mostly concerned with temperament and health. I am just wondering what you thought of her and her dogs. She has an upcoming litter from Ava and Laxfield’s Cold Hard Cash. Just seeking some advise.

What is it that you are wanting about her? Are you looking for a show line GSD? Yes, I have heard of her and I know of at least one pup out of Leah.

Ann is a very honest breeder. That pedigree is fairly nice when it comes to American show dogs. You will probably see nice temperment from that breeding. I would expect some show quality pups in that litter. I do know that Ava’s littermate Gunner was worked in obedience and could of done agility. Dallas (Kismet’s Sight for Sore Eye’s) did produce some offspring that did do AKC obedience and herding. Of course Dallas produced numerous show champions as well. Talk to Ann and ask her about both parents and what they have produced when it comes to working ability in obedience and agility. I would be looking at this litter if I was looking for something to show in conformation. I can tell you that Ann is someone that will stand behind her guarantee, and is someone that you can talk to.

We had taken him to a vet…but hasnt helped much…. probably he had hurt himself while playing…doesnt seem like arthritis…just that there has been a lot of muscle loss…seems like healing but it has been a long time..

Yeah he eats well..though sometimes he skips but that is due to the hot summers..
Havnt tried restricting his movement…he just doesnt sit at one place..probably could try that..and the ointment as well..

I have 4 pedigree German Shepherd Dogs. If he is of good pedigree he should live to 10-12 years and not be prone to hip dysplasia ,(despite the advice offered here by others), this undesirable defect is bred-out not ‘bred-in’ by reputable breeders who would only breed from x-rayed stock with low hip scores.. i.e usually less than 12 total. Lesser known than hip dysplasia is elbow dysplasia which is also a congenitive defect with no cure as such… only recently have hips AND elbows been X-rayed for breeding stock. Because like all of us, the poor guy is getting older his joints will be becoming worn out and steriods/glucosamine may alleviate the symptoms and lead to a partial recovery. The muscle wastage may be due to him carrying the limb and not using it so it will atrophy to some extent. Ask your vet whether anti-inflammatory treatments would help but unfortunately he may never loose the limp. Good luck to both of you… I hope he feels better soon and has a happy and fulfilling life for years to come.

Pemphigus!!!! Who knows about German Shepherd predisposed Pemphigus and a medicine to cure it?

We have a German Shepherd mix who was perfectly healthy until we moved from Upstate NY to Texas..For the past 2 years we have had her on Tetracycline and Niacinamine…For about 6 months last year her Pemphigus TOTALLY broke…We were so happy she didnt have to continue the antibiotics..Then last Novemeber it broke out again….The vets want thousands of dollars we do NOT have….It is cruel the way the vets charge a house mortgage amount to help someone with their dog…..Our dog has blisters around her lip edge, inbetween her toes and once in a while she gets them on the bottom of her tail…I’m told she has a mild dose..yet i want to break this cycle..Recently I came across an add for dinovite..which i’m trying…any suggestions would be much appreciated….

You are going to think I’m crazy, but seriously… try switching your dog to raw food… It is relatively cheap (certainly cheaper than kibble feeding.) I feed 3 dogs… 1 Belgian Malinois (Belgian Shepherd), 1 Malinois/Rhodesian Ridgeback Cross, and a Collie Cross for about $75/month.

My Mal/Rh. Ridgeback cross was full of skin issues when we started fostering her. But, after 3 weeks on raw prey model type of diet, they all cleared up and her fur grew back.

Blue Buffalo is about the best quality food you’d find at a Petsmart—but there are better brands to be found at independant stores – not chain stores like Petsmart or Petco.

Can food is mostly water by weight anyway–it is not just canned meat. The more you add canned food to her dry food, the more she’ll expect it and not eat just dry. So it’s better not to start her on that habit now. You can add a little warm water to her dry food, but she should be able to eat a quality dry food just as it is.

8 year old german shepherd suddenly using bathroom indoors?

I have an 8 year old german shepherd that is housebroken and never uses the bathroom indoors. For the past 2 months he has been peeing on walls and furniture without cause. He isn’t left at home alone all day and gets let outside plenty. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem or knows what might be causing it?
He is showing no signs of being ill but marking furniture with small amounts of urine.

If he was just leaking onto the floor – especially if while he was asleep – then I would say that he had developed incontinence. It is the commonest unwanted side-effect from neutering before a pup is at least a yearling.

If he was piddling all over the place, I would have said that he has a urinary tract infection.

But him deliberately piddling on corners & walls tells me that he is showing dominance and marking “his” territory. It is VERY common when there is more than one dog (male) on a property, and very common when the pooch is under-trained (training involves MUCH more than just house-training!).

Collect a sample of his urine and take it & him to the vet, just in case it’s an infection, but I expect him to be given an all-clear.

You have to convince him that the house is YOUR territory, not HIS. That starts with him spending much time in a roofed security run, being allowed inside the house ONLY when someone can watch him constantly. Whoever’s watching him should have a tennis ball or balled-sock. As soon as he indicates that he’s thinking of marking (sniff is normal, but you should know your dog’s signals), that ball/sock is thrown to hit him, and just as it hits you STAMP on the floor and roar “NO!!” in your deepest attempt at a Russian bass voice, then haul him out to the designated toilet spot. So you’ll need him to be wearing a collar with a short handle clipped to it whenever he is inside.

The ball-throw and its noisy accompaniment are to startle him and convince him that you have an incredibly long invisible arm that can reach him ANYwhere!

Once you have him behaving himself again, you might consider teaching him to ring a bell placed by the back door, or do something similar to let humans know that he wants to go toilet.

How do I get my dogs to get along?

I’ve had a chihuahua for 2 years now. I got 6 week old german shepherd from a friend 3 days ago. The german shepherd is really friendly with my chihuahua but not the other way around. My chihuahua is getting depressed…is there anything i can do to speed up the process and get them to be ok with each other?

My best advice is for you to hire a positive canine behavior professional with experience in behavior modification or the placement of adopted dogs into new homes. A positive behavior professional should be able to assess the level of aggression and help you determine if behavior modification is the right option in this situation or if you should consider re-homing the new dog. Any behavior modification techniques suggested to you by a professional should focus on giving the two dogs pleasant experiences in each other’s presence. If the dogs are punished in each other’s presence for aggression, they will associate pain, fear, or unpleasantness with the other dog- that is exactly the opposite of what you want because it can increase their aggression toward each other!

One of the biggest problems I see with beginning Internet marketers is their inability to choose a proper niche and the keywords associated with that niche. Most beginners do not even understand the concept of the word niche. Let me give you some examples. Gardening is not a niche; it is an area.

How to grow tomatoes would be considered a niche, within the larger gardening area. Dog training is not a niche; that is far too big of an area to compete in. There is too much competition for that term to ever rank well in the search engines with.

However, creating a website dedicated to how to train German Shepherd puppies would be considered a niche, and that probably, with some research, would be do-able with respect to being able to compete in that area, and actually getting traffic to the website.

Most beginners severely underestimate the size of the Internet. With the vastness of the Internet in play, small niches can result in huge financial rewards. Although the majority of people who are dog owners do not have German Shepherds, there are a significant number of people who do that make that a very easily targeted market.

Beginners must understand how to choose the right niche, and select the correct keywords for that niche. One of the biggest areas of frustration with beginning Internet market is a beginner’s inability to choose the correct niche and the keywords associated with that niche.

If the selection process is wrong, everything else done afterward will be for a lost cause. There is no easier way to get started with Internet marketing and enjoy success than by choosing the correct niche, and being able to research the keywords that are most associated with that niche.

Before jumping into an area, the most important question a marketer must ask is, “Can I get traffic to a site about that topic?” One must be able to intelligently answer that question. The skill in making the right decision for that question is the single most important skill that must be learned before moving onto other, more basic matters such as building the site, building a list, etc.

Too often beginners make the mistake of “trying to make money” far before they are ready. The old saying, “you have to learn to crawl before you can walk” comes to mind. I have a 7 Month Old German Shepherd male, and i was wondering if it was still possible to train him to attack on command, speak on command etc?
I have trained him to sit, follow, just general stuff, which hes ok at.

I know its dangerous and they can be lethal weapons, but how do i go about training him to do the following?

You DON’T train to attack command….it’s very unlikely the dog would do it anyway. One in a few hundred thousand dogs will attack ON COMMAND …unprovoked. The dog will ALWAYS know when there is a threat before you…do you want him to come to you and ask for the “command”?
Obedience and tricks are perfect timing…start now. For “PROTECTION” training, go to a trainer to have him evaluated at 12-14 months. Until that time, make sure he is COMPLETELY social…do not encourage any aggressive behavior. You CAN NOT train protection yourself. His lineage will be a good indication of whether or not he’ll be able to do the protection work.

Protection – Dogs are often trained to protect, as may be the case with police dogs, attack dogs, and guard dogs. They are trained with specific commands to both identify a threat and attack that threat. Alternatively, they could be trained to protect a specific object or person without commands.

The quality of Schutzhund is to provide a dog with a very highly specific set of skills they can use to complete a given task quickly and efficiently. Dogs in official training courses programs might complete training courses for a price of 20% or lower. However, Schutzhund dog training can be just as effective as an obedience regimen for dog owners at home.
