Is there any justification for this type of behavior?

A white German Shepherd was found in the river near where I live. It had a concrete block tied to it and the story was on the news last night. It is heartbreaking to see that people can be so callous and uncaring about animals but at the same time it was good to see that so many people in my area are enraged by this act and won’t rest until the culprit is found.

If you opt for a German Shepherd (purebred) puppy then you will be getting a predictable dog. The breeder will be able to show you the parents of your chosen puppy and easily predict the future size, temperament and looks of your dog. You can also find out about the breed in general by visiting the German Shepherd Club for your country – the German Shepherd is such a popular breed that there is a worldwide umbrella organization for breed enthusiasts – this means you will have no problem finding out about the breeds requirements and average temperament! Getting a puppy means you’ll be able to influence its future character and as long as training starts at a young age you will likely get a very well behaved, predictable dog. If your thoughts do not immediately spring to the notion of a puppy, some GSD breeders may have older dogs for adoption that were returned to them for various reasons, the breed society will also hold information of adult GSDs looking for homes in your area – the pros of adopting an older GSD from the breed society or a local breeder is that their dogs temperaments are likely to be well known and they will often still have the dogs pedigree with the names of its parents – so you can still judge the health, temperament, and if still youngish, size of the dog.

There are also plenty of adult GSDs searching for homes in rescue centres worldwide – I do not think I have ever visited a shelter which did not contain at least one of these dogs. The pros of adopting a shelter GSD is that you will helping a dog that may otherwise have been put to sleep and you will have the opportunity to adopt a dog whose size and character is now definitely decided. The cons are that GSDs are very intelligent dogs and have a natural tendency to develop unwanted guarding behaviors if not properly socialized – a shelter GSD may have aggressive behavioral problems or a possessive nature which only makes them suitable for an experienced GSD owner who knows how to cope with them. GSDs are also quite susceptible to Hip Displacia and other health ailments that a rescue dog cannot be cleared of possibly carrying – this also needs to be taken into account if you search for a puppy – find a breeder who is responsible and hip-scores all potential breeding stock and is registerd with the Breed Society -beware of back-yard breeders!

This is not to say that shelter GSDs do not make good pets – this is anything but the truth! However they are likely to have behavioral problems which may take a long time to work with and if you’re not experienced you may find yourself returning the dog which is unfair on the animal. If you find a well-balanced GSD in a shelter or are confident you can work with its problems, they will make an excellent pet and I would definitely recommend you choose to adopt if possible!

You shouldn’t buy a German Shepherd/Labrador x from a *breeder* – it will have been either an accidental litter which means you can’t guarantee the health of the puppies or will have simply been bred to make fast cash. There are already millions of crossbreed dogs dying in shelters and you shouldn’t give your money to somebody who is breeding more – ESPECIALLY if they call their dogs Labrador Shepherds or German Labradors, Alsatiadors or any other ridiculous designer cross breed name. They are breeding for money and may have bred animals susceptible to health disorders or with unpredictable temperaments. No matter what a breeder tells you, you also can’t predict the size or looks of a crossbreed and which breed they will look most like so *cuteness* isn’t really a factor – you could get a GSD sized labrador look alike or GSD lookalike with the personality of a Labrador – you won’t know until the dog grows up.

If you want a German Shepherd, Lab cross visit your local shelter and find a cross breed – don’t buy a puppy. There are plenty of Lab and GSD crosses in shelters, but don’t expect to know whether your particular dog is an exact cross of Lab and GSD – you will never know!

Also, don’t choose a dog because of their cuteness or good looks! The German Shepherd is a beautiful dog but they are highly intelligent and will not live quietly as a *pet* alone – you will need to work them or involve them in competitive obedience or agility classes to truly keep them happy, they are not simply a dog, they are a real part of your family! A german shepherd needs lots of exercise and stimulation and you should take this into account when deciding if the breed is right for you.

Labradors and German Shepherds are highly popular breeds – so if you choose a puppy of either breed take care to find a responsible breeder or you will get a sickly dog prone to health disorders.

Let your dog feel he is part of the family as much as possible. He should be used to and play frequently with every member of the family. He should be kept around when visitors come. Your dog’s natural protective instincts are stronger when he feels that he is part of the family.

Obedience training is very important for your dog. He should be trained on basic commands as sit, heel etc. He must be trained to be obedient in all situations. If your dog is not obedient, he cannot protect you. Your dog must be able to obey commands both on and off leash.

You will need a friend to help you to train your dog to attack on command. Get a life size doll or make a scarecrow with some old clothes. Let your friend stay behind the doll and use a stick to poke the dog’s nose. He will get irritated and start to growl. Now issue the command to attack. Reward with praise every time he gets it. Do it over and over until he can back and attack just by hearing your ‘attack’ command.  

Be as gentle as you can during this training. Don’t be harsh or use any force. Just help the dog to bring out his natural aggression and protective ability. Remember advanced attack training is for professionals. It could backfire on you if you try it.

Cross Breed Dogs?

Good or bad??

I posted another question and someone has really put me off, saying that a cross breed gets all the bad traits of both breeds…is this true!? And why would that happen!? Mum and dad are both loving family pets, friendly and well trained – so why would their puppies be bad news, just because they happen to be cross breeds?!

I had a pure bred German Shepherd dog before, I never ever want to replace him, so thought I’d go for a cross breed Shepherd, so I could still get the Shepherd traits, but in a different physical form (it’s a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross). I am paying a token for the dog to ensure I am serious, but I now feel put off, by someone saying there are no guarantees with cross breeds, so I should steer clear.

No whoever said that lied. It’s not true that the offspring will get all the bad traits at all! That would put me off too. The offspring will either get recessive or dominant or both genes from the parents. and who knows which one is bad???? lol

but don’t pay attention to whoever said- go out and get your puppy! he (or she) will be GREat!!!!!

My parents recently lost our family dog, Joey, about 2 weeks ago. The place we got him 14 years ago no longer sells mix breeds like him, any idea where we can find a puppy of the same breed?
I know about pet finder.com but I’ve been having problems finding anything in the area. I suppose what I’m looking for is a breeder so I can make sure it’s not a puppy mill operation.
